How To Make Wooden Toys
The other day I found myself with a couple of hours free and thought it would be nice to make myself some new toys. My old toys, while loved very much by my offspring, had taken on the patina of age.I’ve never been one for moving with the times so was not tempted by any of the plastic offerings in toy shops. I decided to keep it simple and went out and chopped up some wood.
I didn’t really have a plan, just took my time to select pieces that were roughly the right thickness and length. The only real aim was not to produce any toys that might cause injury or unnecessary distress. After all I had two young children very close by who would be my first guinea pigs.
I began by splitting a log of wood which had been lying around in the garden for a few months.
I didn’t have to split it far before reaching a serendipitous heart shape, so decided to cut one half in half again and make four toys from a single piece of wood. As a general rule, all the toys were around 12 inches long and made from a single piece of wood.
Once I’d produced my four rough heart shapes it was time to decide what would go where. I tried not to be too scientific about this stage but did try to balance weight distribution as best I could. For example, heavy blocks went on the heavier side of the heart, pencils on the thinner side etc.
I decided to draw them using India ink as I wanted to retain some definition when cutting round them.
Not that it made any difference since I was going to cut right into the heart shape mark anyway! One thing that helped was drawing around a coin with a pair of dividers which made the circles and arcs all the same size.
I was using a coping saw and detail gouges to make these toys and I found it easier to draw around everything first, then cut inside the line. That way I could clearly see what was meant to be there and what would need removing later after cutting out the shape.
The next step was to remove wood using my detail gouges.
I used a large one for the bulk of the material and smaller ones for between the fingers etc. I used both straight cuts and circular cutting motions with this tool, making sure not to press too hard so as not to split the timber while at the same time removing small amounts of material all over the place.
At this stage I changed tools to a round file for the fine detail work. To keep things simple I used one size of file and just swapped ends when changing direction or going from concave to convex surfaces.
I found that if I worked carefully with an eye on what was being removed, the files left a very smooth surface.
They are a very versatile tool since they can go in any direction and produce all kinds of patterns. I was careful not to press too hard with the files, only light pressure is needed for a good finish.
I went back to the gouges to remove some of the material between fingers etc. This help define sizes and depths even more clearly, and perhaps more importantly, stopped fingers from just falling away once cut.
I used a small gouge then to cut the pointier bits off the ends of digits that had been filed flat by accident. I didn’t want them any thicker than they were to start with so tried to keep dimensions as true as possible.
The last job was to cut a groove around the thickest section of each toy where the string would go.
I could have used a round file for this but it is easy enough with an ordinary chisel and mallet. In fact it’s almost therapeutic, lifting out little chunks of wood to leave just enough room for your cord before tapping in wedges to keep cord in place.
What you need:
Tools: – coping saw, small chisels (I used 2mm and 4mm), round files (size 1 or 0), small gouges (1/4in and 1/8in) – mallet, dividers, pencils, rubber band.
1. Find suitable piece of wood, split into two or four pieces depending on size of toy desired.
2. Draw design onto wood using pencil and dividers to draw round coins for circles/ arcs etc
3. Cut designs out with coping saw (draw line first) then use chisels and gouges to smooth out surfaces and remove small quantities of material in various places.
4. Use files and chisels to mark details and grooves (if desired).
5. Finish with rubber mallet to tap wedges into place which will keep your cord in place. [Article ends] Comment: On this particular piece the author has made a simple ball, much like a billiard ball, but with two faces. It could be used as a candle holder since it stands on its own without the cord. However if you don’t want it to stand then you can drill a small hole into one side and use that as a base instead.
There is much more material still available in the book from which this material is taken. If you are interested in learning more then have a look at the table of contents to see what’s inside.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TOYS IN A CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT
In today’s society, toys have become a huge part of the lives of children. They are powerful tools for teaching and learning as well as being popular among children. If a child has a toy, they feel safer and happier, which will benefit them in their development. Toys actually influence how a child learns to play and interact with others. Children who are expos to toys which encourage their age appropriate skills tend to have greater, more diverse play experiences.
Toy group has many benefits for children’s development, for example some benefits that come from playing with toy cars include: encouraging new experiences, active learning through play, promoting social interaction and development of logical thinking. All these benefits are important for a child’s development.
Playing with toy cars encourages new experiences from an early age because children from a young age can view the car as a means of transportation, this is something that they would not experience in life unless they were to travel by themselves. This encourages a child to think outside of their comfort zone and give them a sense of adventure. For instance, I have a toy car at home my child plays with it every day he imagines the car as transportation himself to different places for example, the shops or even his grandmas house.
Another benefit of playing with toys is that they can encourage children to be active during play which will allow them to develop new skills.
For example, when children play with toy cars they might want to move the car around which will encourage them to develop their gross motor skills. If a child is moving their bodies while playing this will result in them being more active during other parts of the day.
Toy cars can also promote social interactions between children. This is because when children get together they can share their toy cars and use them in play together. For example, two children will be able to include each other in their game of playing with the car, this will encourage social interactions with others. Children tend to learn most effectively when they are having fun so it’s important for them to learn how to work together during playtime.
Not only does playing with toys influence the development of a child’s physical skills,
they also influence logical thinking. This is because when children play with toy cars they will make up their own games out of the set rules provided by the car. For example, my child has created an imaginary car racing game in which he move his car around and make engine sounds. I have also noticed that when children play with toy cars they tend to develop a sense of how things work for example,
my child likes to make the car go in a zigzag motion and will push it in a round
About way he then looks at me and says “gosh mum look what this car can do” then he tells me how it works. This shows that when children play with toy cars they learn how things work in the real world for example; my son has learnt that cars move in a forward motion and not in any other way
There are many toys on the market, but some of the most popular ones include:
board games, puzzles, dolls, action figures, toy cars, stuffed toys and play kitchens. All of these toys have distinct advantages so children should be expos to them early on in their life. Board games help develop skills such as: turn taking, strategy and planning ahead. Puzzles encourage problem solving and reasoning while also developing fine motor skills. Dolls build nurturing skills and the ability to care for others, they also encourage imaginative play.
Action figures promote physical activity through pretend play
They develop social skills by encouraging children to share with each other. Toy cars are great at inspiring movement and building gross motor skills while also promoting new experiences. Stuffed toys build emotional development in young children this is because the child can relate to the toy in some way. Play kitchens encourage creativity and imagination in children by making them think that they are working in a real-life kitchen.
